Conceptual Models

The spring and pump mechanism symbolize that firefighters must be ready to spring into action at any time. (kinda cheesy)

The two found objects include a piece of paper and a piece of bark with holes in it. The bark is a barrier between the crime that the forest is known for and the safety the firefighters provide.

After wrapping a plastic bottle in trace paper and setting it ablaze the remaining materials were combined to create a concept that characterizes both the vernacular architecture of the Native Americans and the random danger that fire brings to any situation.

Shigeru Ban Paper Relief House

The walls are made from 106mm diameter, 4mm thick paper tubes, with tenting material for the roof. The 1.8m space between houses was used as a common area. The cost of materials for one 52 square meter unit is below $2000. The unit are easy to dismantle, and the materials easily disposed or recycled.

The foundation consists of donated beer crates loaded with sandbags.

He chose 'kirin' beer crates over those of a rival company because their yellow and red color harmonized better with the brown of the paper tubes.

For insulation, a waterproof sponge tape backed with adhesive is sandwiched between the paper tubes of the walls.
